Crochet Stitches UK and US terms

Basic Crochet Stitch for UK and US

wool and crochet hook from Ann's Stash
One of the many things I found confusing when I started crochet was the difference between UK and US crochet terms. If you want to make the best use of all those free patterns available on the internet then it is useful to know both. Here is my chart on basic crochet stitches and the differences between UK and US. You can print it out and have it handy when you find that pattern you just HAVE to make.

Although I am in the UK I actually prefer the US terms. Think of them as building blocks each stitch builds a block - so a single crochet creates one building block high, half double crochet = 2 blocks high, double crochet = 3 blocks high and so on.

Pick of the Week: Best Free Crochet Flower Pattern

4 of the Best Free Crochet Flower Patterns Online

crochet roses from the dsign by naztazia
I always appreciate the generosity of folks who post free crochet patterns and I thought I would like to acknowledge that with 4 of my favourite crochet flower patterns.

Since I learned to crochet I have gone on to design my own flowers but I still come back to these and many have inspired me to go on to create many of my own. I confess some of designs have been errors, sometimes I remember what I did, sometimes I don't.

I hope you enjoy these flower patterns and do let me know if you try them out.

How to Crochet a Wagon Wheel Flower

Use buttons to attach crochet flower
Crochet Flowers are always popular and I adapted this one to use on a lariat flower garland scarf. I made life easy for myself by attaching buttons to the garland and then using the hole in the center of the flower to attach them to the scarf. I wouldn't say it is the easiest flower I have made, it can be a bit fiddly as the spaces can be quite tight - well worth the effort though.

You'll find both UK and US pattern instructions here.
