I designed and made this simple scarf with tassels in under an hour using only 1 ball of yarn - 40 yards of Allsorts Super Chunky Yarn from Stylecraft. Here you will find full instructions on how you can make your own using any yarn - plus - how to make a simple tassel using your fingers. This forms one of my DIY crafting kits.

How to Arm Knit

If you haven't come across arm knitting yet - prepare to become addicted. It is easy, can be done by kids and adults alike, it creates stylish scarves in a very short space of time and you only need some yarn and your arms!  Chunky yarn works best and there is plenty to choose from - this is the one I used here.

Casting on with Arm Knitting

Casting on can be a bit tricky to begin with but this is by far the easiest how-to video I have found. I did find the demo here left a huge tail at the end and you really don't need all that much for finishing. And for me, I wanted the extra at the end to make tassels so I measured my long tail slightly differently. Instead of using an arm length I simple wrapped it around my fist about 6 times and that was enough. You might need a bit of trial and error at first but you can start again as often as you like.

Cast on 9 stitches

To form a braided scarf - think of your 9 stitches in 3 groups of 3. The stitch closest to your palm is the 1st stitch.

Hold the yarn from the ball of yarn between your thumb and forefinger.

Lift the 3rd stitch over your palm, let it drop so the yarn you are holding in your thumb and forefinger forms a new loop. Take it off and twist it 3 times (most patterns only twist once but I like more) transfer it to your other arm.

Repeat with the 2nd stitch then the 1st stitch to form you first braid.

Move on to the next group of 3 so you work stitch 6 then stitch 5 then stitch 4

Move on to the last group of 3 so you work stitch 9 then stitch 8 then stitch 7.

Continue until you have used most of the yarn. Leave a yarn or so to make your tassels. Bind off as per this video but you don't need to sew the ends together.

  1. I like it! My daughters have tried the finger crocheting. I bet they would both enjoy this as well.
