How to Crochet Flowers
This is an easy - 3 row pattern that even a beginner can master in no time. You can use any yarn and hook for this pattern - it is great for using up scraps of yarn too. Depending on the thickness of the yarn and the size of the hook, your flowers with be smaller or bigger accordingly.I used a UK double knitting, US light worsted yarn with a size 5 mm or US size L hook. I like to use varigated yarn for some of these as it gives interesting variations. Of course you get variations in colour depending how you roll it but you also get a variation on which way up you roll it. One way produces a puffy petal look, the other an open petal look.

Start with a slip knot
Row 1: Chain 50 plus 1 for turning
Row 2: In the 2nd chain from the hook - double crochet, chain 1, double crochet - this forms a V shape you will follow in the next row. *Skip one stitch and DC, ch1, Dc in next stitch* repeat to end of row, chain 3 and turn
Row 3: Into each V shape you made in the last row make 1 sc, 1 halfDC, 1 DC, 1 TC, 1 DC, 1 halfDC, 1 SC - repeat to the end and tie off leaving a long tail to use for sewing up.
Lay your crochet out flat:
ready to roll - crochet flower puff petals upward |
you will see if you lay it one way the petals curl down, if you roll it up like this it will give your flower a slightly puffy petal look.
ready to roll - crochet flower open petal upward |
The other way the petals curl up - this one will give you the more open petal look.
sew the flower together using the long tail - sew through and through until it is secure. You can leave a tail to attach it to any project, a scarf, bag, hat or headband for example.
